When I first saw a tangle, I thought it was “just doodling.” But as I studied more, I learned how different it is from doodling or other drawing types.
to Tangle…
is to use the Zentangle® drawing method, producing patterns called “tangles”:
“an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. It was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. ‘Zentangle’ is a registered trademark of Zentangle, Inc.”

- Tangling is a mindful, deliberate process of drawing tangles.
- Tangles are patterns that are non-representational, non-directional, repetitive, teachable, unique, and elegant.
- Only simple strokes are used — usually 1 or 2 types (either line, orb, arc, dot, or s)
- Unlike so many other activities, there are no mistakes in tangling.
- Though they may look complicated, tangles are all easy to create … “one stroke at a time”®.
- Focus is to slow down and appreciate the process.
- Repetitive strokes are soothing so stress is reduced.
why Learn to tangle?
It is for everyone, from the person who says, “I can’t draw” to the artist who says, “I’ve been drawing my entire life.”
- For the beginner, it builds self-confidence, develops art skills, and helps nurture individual style.
- For the non-beginner, it offers an effective remedy for artist’s block, the challenge of deconstructing patterns, and a new palette of “colors” to explore.
- For all, it provides a new strategy for understanding the elements and principles of art.
what have Others said?
“For me, Zentangle is: an art form, a hand exercise, an escape from reality, a pathway back to reality, an everyday practice, something to increase focus, a place where ideas come from, perfection, a mess, a smile, a gift for a friend, a gift for myself, something special, and mine.”

“I’ve had people who’ve told me how their sleep patterns have improved since they started tangling 15 minutes before they went to bed. People have also reported how their blood pressure has gone down significantly, how they’ve stopped stressing about life. A student of mine who works with behaviorally-challenged kids in the US saw a marked difference in their behavior — a child who couldn’t sit still for two minutes, would tangle for half an hour.”
