Demo: Mushroom

Poke & Play

One of the earliest Zentangle® patterns is Pokeroot… inspired by berries growing on a tall perennial.

But when I first learned the tangle years ago, I had never heard of the plant. So I thought it was inspired by mushrooms… and thought it rather odd to have the stems growing out of the top of the caps!

Inspired and informed by Pokeroot, we explore Mushrooms:

April Fulton “Mushrooms are good for you. but are they medicine?” NPR.org

shapes to Explore:

  • Cap — half-circle; flat bottom
  • Stem — ¼ width of cap
  • No petals or leaves

things to Notice:

  • Surface — smooth, with a bit of shine
  • Shadow — cast by cap onto stem (or mushrooms onto others)
  • Shadow — identifying form of the object
  • Stem height — varies, but cap size is about the same
  • Community — grow close together and around each other
  • thoughts on Inspiration — To Research or Not

for a Gallery:

  • black ink on white Zentangle® tile (3½”x3½”)
  • shaded with graphite, then colored pencil/pens
  • background: watercolor
