Hardscape in Landscape
A bit of info: Landscape includes “softscape” (the things that grow) and “hardscape” (everything else, such as trellises, benches, walkways).
Another early Zentangle® pattern is nZeppel, which uses some type of grid (intersecting lines) and can help us explore stone walls, especially as hardscape in our gardens.
shapes to Explore:
- Grid pattern – regular (straight lines, intersecting perpendicularly), polar, ogee, organic, etc.
- Corners – round to form enclosed shapes
- Leaves – could use the tangle PokeLeaf as inspiration
- Floral – could use the tangle Cyme as inspiration
things to Notice:
- What to draw first – the item that is in front, closest to viewer (draw leaves first, then draw wall behind)
- Shading – remember to have both “form” and “cast” shadows
- Highlight – “save the white” (paper color) – especially when coloring (for example, the leaves)
- Reflected light – light that appears on the shaded side because it “bounces” off other objects (stones behind reflect light onto back of stones in front)
for a Gallery:
- black ink on white Zentangle® tile (3½”x3½”)
- shaded with graphite, then colored pencil/pens
