Deepening Depth
Ruffle-petals and lots of layers, Carnations invite exploration of texture (the folds and ruffles of the petal edge) and shadow that is cast on other petals, etc. (to explore form shadow, see Demo: Zinnia).
shapes to Explore:
- Bloom shape – round
- Petals number — many, overlapping, radiating from center
- Petal shape – triangular, spiral, folds that “ruffle” along outer edge
- Center of bloom — usually not visible (hidden by petals)
- Buds — short, tight bundle of petals
- Leaves — thin, pointed, pairs, long to short at top
- Stems — straight, grey-green
things to Notice:
- “Cast” the shadow – to show shape onto a different surface (a petal behind/under, a fold, the background, etc.)
